Calculate Large Dog Years to Human Years, how to find Out Your Large Dog Age in Human Years.
The average lifespan for large dog breeds is 8 to 12 years, while giant breeds tend to live an average of 8 to 10 years.
Some of the largest dog breeds and their average lifespans are:
- Great Dane: 7-10 years
- Mastiff: 6-10 years
- Newfoundland: 8-10 years
- Saint Bernard: 8-10 years
- Great Pyrenees: 10-12 years
Large dogs, such as Golden Retrievers, Labradors, and German Shepherds, have a different aging pattern compared to smaller breeds.
Their size, genetics, and overall health play a significant role in determining their lifespan and how they age.
The reason large dogs age more quickly than humans at first is because dogs physically develop far more rapidly. While humans are infants or toddlers at ages 1-2, large dogs have reached physical maturity and adulthood.
Their growth and aging slow down considerably once they are fully developed. This is why we stop counting “dog years” in a 1:7 ratio after age 2.
Knowing your large dog lifespan in human years can help you anticipate their health and care needs.
For example, by ages 5-7 (or 35-49 human years), your dog will start to slow down and may develop age-related health issues typical of middle age. These include arthritis, eye problems, or heart disease. You may need to change their diet, exercise routine, or provide joint supplements.
At age 10+ (70+ human years), your senior dog will require more specialized veterinary care to maintain quality of life. Issues like incontinence, cognitive dysfunction, cancerous growths, or kidney disease often impact large, older dogs. Adapting their environment and providing prescription medications or assisted mobility devices can greatly improve their “golden years.”

Approach:
- Early Growth: Dogs, irrespective of their size, mature faster in their early years. The first year of a dog’s life is roughly equivalent to about 15 human years.
- Size Factor: Larger dog breeds tend to have shorter lifespans compared to smaller breeds. They also mature at a different rate in their subsequent years.
- Subsequent Years: After the first two years, the conversion rate for large breeds is different from small or medium breeds. For large breeds, each subsequent year after the first two can be considered equivalent to about 7 human years.

How old is my large breed dog in human years?
To determine your large breed dog’s age equivalent in human years, you can use this simple calculation based on the formula discussed:
- First calculate how old your large dog is in years. For example, if your dog was born in 2017 and it’s now 2024, they would be 7 years old. (You can also ask your vet for help determining your dog’s actual age if unsure).
- If your dog is 1 year old, their age equals 15 human years.
- If they are 2 years old, they equal 24 human years.
- For every year over 2 years old, multiply the additional number of years by 7 and add 24.
For my example of a 7 year old large dog:
- They are 7 years old
- Subtract 2 from that gives 5 additional years
- Multiply those extra years by 7: 5 x 7 = 35
- Then add 24: 24 + 35 = 59.
Therefore, my 7 year old large dog would be 59 years old in human years.
It’s that straightforward! Just use your dog’s actual years to calculate the human age equivalent. You can also reference the conversion chart to easily look up your dog’s age in human years.
Large Dog Age Chart
Some key points about the chart:
- For the first year, 15 human years are shown because that first year contains immense growth and maturation for a puppy into an adult dog.
- At year 2, they are a mature adult dog so 24 human years are listed.
- From 3 years onwards, each additional dog year adds 7 human years. So 3 dog years = 31 human years, 4 dog years = 38 human years, and so forth.
- By year 10 (80 human years), large dogs are considered “senior” and would exhibit signs of old age. Veterinary care becomes increasingly important at this advanced stage.
- The last column shows dogs living over 10 years, to 12-15 years old (94 to 115 human years). This would be considered an exceptionally long life for breeds like Great Danes or Mastiffs. Smaller oversight might live to 16 years or more.
